A spinal misalignment, degenerative disc condition or acute spinal injury can cause everything from neck or back pain to disabling nerve dysfunction. But if you're like most patients with spinal issues, you're looking for a more conservative alternative to major surgery. Here at Gray Chiropractic & Sports Associates, we have one such alternative. Our Winston Salem chiropractor can treat many spinal problems with a painless, non-surgical method known as the Cox Technique.
The Cox Technique relies on the basic principle of flexion distraction, an outward-pulling force applied to the spinal column with great care and precision to improve vertebral alignment and normalize disc position. Spinal misalignment and/or acute injury can cause discs to develop micro-tears in their outer casing that can lead to full-scale herniation and painful nerve root impingement. Bulging discs that have lost their water content (and thus their height) can also press on nerve roots while straining the facet joints that articulate the vertebrae. The Cox Technique's use of flexion distraction can create just enough space between vertebrae to return discs to their proper place, while the vacuum pressure from the flexion distraction sends water and other valuable nutrients into the discs.
Our chiropractor, Dr. Gray, will have you lie comfortably on our special Cox table for this procedure. The Cox table can be adjusted incrementally along various angles to provide the exact kind of flexion distraction your spinal column needs. Not only is the Cox Technique painless, but it can actually be quite soothing as longstanding internal tensions and painful problems are addressed -- all without drugs or surgery.
There are many situations in which the Cox Technique us more useful and effective than other forms of flexion distraction therapy. For instance, some forms of traction or spinal decompression require the patient to be lying face up, which isn't necessarily the best way to treat that patient's specific issues. These other techniques may also be limited to administering purely vertical flexion distraction, while the Cox Technic allows for a variety of hands-on adjustments.
Many patients who suffer from spinal disc issues can benefit from the Cox Technique. This healing modality can address conditions such as:
We may prescribe Cox Technique sessions alongside exercises and other therapies to help you enjoy optimal results.
